Club News

From Andy Brett, General Manager:

Firstly, I hope everyone had a good festive period & Happy New Year from all the team here at Sherfield Oaks. Here’s to an exciting 2022 for all at the club.

Weather-wise towards the end of December was awful, with heavy downpours some days resulting to closing both courses all together was not ideal. Recently we have reverted to using the Trafalgar course, so Ross & his team can concentrate on the continued drainage works to the Wellington Course.

For those not familiar with the Trafalgar course, below is a picture of the site with directional lines, yellow lines marking the holes themselves and blue lines marking the paths between green and tees.

Captains’ Update

From Guy Wright, Club Captain 2021: My Captaincy year:

On reflection, I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being Club Captain. The start of my year was a real disappointment, with lockdown forcing the closure of the club until the end of March, but the following 8 months have been a real roller coaster ride. We have seen a real positive change to our clubhouse and course over the last year and seen memberships rise from over 300 to over 900 and we have seen an increase in these new players joining in our club competitions which is fantastic.

It has been a pleasure to work with Ed over the last year and I have been impressed with his enthusiasm, drive and vision for our club. Thank you also to Andy, Amy and Julie who work tirelessly running the club day to day. To Nick Darby who runs the GG online store, and I would recommend to all members that they look at the web site, Nick will try and price match wherever possible. A special thank you to Yvonne Brooke at GG community outreach team who went above and beyond is helping with the recent fundraiser.

From Norah McPhail, Ladies’ Captain 2021:

My Captaincy seems to have flown by and the Sherfield Ladies have been amazing. It has been an honour and a privilege to be their Captain. I have so many amazing memories to look back on and I would like to thank them all for their help and support throughout the year. I could not have done it without them.

I would also like to thank Andy, Amy and her fantastic team, Ross and his band of Merry Men, Julie Bond, Chris Conquest, John Taylor, Keith Lockett, Ed Berridge, Lewis Fost, Emma Clayton and finally, our outstanding Club Captain Guy.

I wishing incoming Captains’ Emma, Karen, and Ed every success for 2022!

Community Outreach

From Yvonne Brooke, Community Development Officer: Over the last month the team have been finalising our Partner Charities and Schools for 2022.

We will be launching the partnerships in January but would like to thank all the Captain’s, of all the sections at each site for their time on this process. They will be working together to raise funds, awareness, share the workload and increase the local impact of their chosen charity.

We will have 8 local charities to support and are making a commitment for the next three years. We hope this will bring the membership together for a common cause, create some great social interactions throughout the year, and embed the chosen group within the club.

Get Golfing hopes to enhance the great work our members do in raising valuable funds for local charities by offering support to both the charities and the amazing members and volunteers at our sites.

Along with Anthony Nolan as our Group Charity we look forward to having a great impact on our local communities and becoming hubs for a wide variety of activities and community groups.
